Anxiety is a common but often misunderstood experience. It can be overwhelming, isolating, and deeply impactful on daily life. As a psychologist, I have guided many through their struggles with anxiety, but my own journey with it has given me a profound understanding and empathy for those who face it.

Personal Journey

Years ago, before I became a psychologist, I went through a period of intense anxiety. It started gradually, with small worries growing into overwhelming fears. Everyday tasks became daunting, and I often felt on edge. My heart would race, and my mind was constantly filled with "what if" scenarios. Despite my training and knowledge, experiencing anxiety firsthand was a humbling and enlightening experience.

At first, I tried to hide my anxiety, fearing that admitting it would make me seem weak or incapable. I thought I could manage it on my own, but the more I suppressed it, the stronger it seemed to become. It wasn't until I embraced my vulnerability and sought help that I began to see a way forward.

Strategies for Healing and Moving Forward

  1. Embracing Vulnerability:
    • Admitting I needed help was the hardest step, but it was also the most liberating. I realized that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but a source of strength. By acknowledging my anxiety, I was able to address it head-on. Talking about my struggles with trusted friends and colleagues made me feel less alone and more supported.
  2. Developing Coping Strategies:
    • With the help of a therapist, I learned various coping strategies to manage my anxiety. Mindfulness and deep breathing exercises became daily practices. These techniques helped me stay grounded and present, reducing the intensity of my anxiety. One exercise that particularly helped was visualizing a calm place, which provided a mental escape during overwhelming moments.
  3. Prioritizing Self-Care:
    • I made a conscious effort to prioritize self-care. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep became integral parts of my routine. I also rediscovered my love for painting, which served as a therapeutic outlet for my emotions. By taking care of my physical and mental health, I built a stronger foundation to handle anxiety.
